A Story From a Mind that was Damaged…. How Assistive Technology Helps….Wake up and Start Doing Something!
Hello, I have had multiple traumatic brain and bodily injuries and I must use Assistive Technology to make my life easier, less stressful, more independent and for a better quality. I still have an “ok” long-term memory and I use assistive technology on my PC and my cell phone. I have to due to my cognitive impairments.
Post a real lot of cognitive rehabilitation, speech and language pathology, psychotherapy, neurological optomology, and a bunch of other therapies to put “Humpty Dumpty” back together again…. I learned or was told what my brain could do…and there is so much that is cannot do….Big bummer….ahhhhh, maybe….No! I’m alive, so, screw it….
I am not the person I was before, but I am a valuable person none-the-less… I was asked to dictate a blog about me for eBe.. At first, I thought, “who cares about me?….” Then those words really resonated with me…
You see, I have had to spend a real lot of money, time, energy (which I do not have), dealt with crabby staff, begged for money, grants or Assistive Technology donations, cried, have been turned down by insurance companies, have struggled, done without, advocated and push ed for Assistive Technology.
Where has all of this effort gotten me? hahah..Nowhere…From the disabled person’s perspective the whole bunch of AT companies have missed the boat! Listen Bill Gate’s Foundation, Warren Buffet, Ray Kurzweil, and so many others……You are phony and toying with people of disabilities….. Oh, by the way, I am only one disabled voice….but, an economist…Drucker, I believe, would shake his head in disgust and look at you and remind you that you blew it.
1) Your voluminous paperwork is not something that anyone with impairment can do….
2) Your staff is not helpful when approached (call or email) by disabled people….
3) Your own website bury how to help the disabled and assistive technology funding…..
4) You make products that no one can afford, as we are on a limited income….
5) You are part of the problem, though you pat yourselves on the back with your exceptional accomplishments….
Goody for you! I am astonished by the lack of humanity and understanding which I have personally experienced from your company (or staff) and how crappy they treat disabled people….Great training program and fabulous-entitled personnel you have……I am so impressed….oh, wait, they were rude and incompetent….That’s right, I’m impaired, not stupid…perhaps they missed that day of training regarding customer etiquette…..
Additionally, you are not developing Assistive Technology or accessibility-friendly technologies for the users who need them….You are a greedy corporate environment….and have no idea how to deal with this market….
Well, I was asked to put together a post for eBe……The post message is wake up and get a clue AT developers (don’t care what your name is or where you are on a philanthropy list)…..You have screwed up so badly and haven’t made the accomplishments which the media and others without disabilities praise and award you with…
You are simply people too…and how dare you exploit my community… Let’s really see what you have for AT and make it easy to acquire and available to those in need….then perhaps you will be worthy of all the praise from the only community that matters…THE DISABILITY COMMUNITY…..Until then, thanks for nothing……
Kind regards, Sylvia
