It is a slightly snowy New England today. Just a dusting. It is January 30, 2012, and we have not had much snow. So it is kinda pretty.

We usually publish blogs about cancer and/or disability. Our hope is to make the world a better place. We enjoy sharing our experiences. We provide resources, networking, ideas for sports rehab, and let you know what we’re doing. We’re usually ”on the move,” biking, kayaking, doing triathlon, fund-raising for charity, and trying really hard to stay physically active and mentally fit.

What you don’t see is our other talents. We are electronicBRAINedgement. We love gadgets, gizmos, tech stuff, nerdiness and “fixing things.” We are the complex group who enjoy life and all of its wonders. Today’s blog it is to show our love of photography, and nature.

You see, we take a lot of pictures. Too many (hahahahhaaa) based on the drain on our server. We rarely get to go through them. Well, we should more often. After coffee, we looked at some pictures…What we liked were our florals/garden shots.

Please sit back, relax and enjoy where we live….New England-we share our passion for technology and nature with you….

Our color palette is bold. We choose to cultivate flowers, grasses and herbs of rich colors and freaky textures (yes, those are the technical terms). We enjoy contrasting scenaries. Our approach to gardening is multi-media. All photos taken with either Nokia mobile phones, HTC mobile phones or a Canon Power Shot. All of the photos are our own and taken in my personal flower garden. This is the beauty that surrounds us. ENJOY!

Wild Lupine…Wow.. They have a unique look. They remind me of a forest of really cool purple/blue flowers that stand tall and stick together.

About the PMC

Today I’ve committed to raising money for cancer research by riding in the 2012 Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC). On the first weekend in August, I will join 5,500 cyclists in the PMC ride, an annual bike-a-thon that raises money for research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DCFI) in Boston.

My story is simple….We are family who has been touched by cancer and WE ARE FIGHTING BACK!

2009, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer….Surgery, chemo, radiation and a NEW BEGINNING……….

I am 2-years out and count every day as a blessing….Cancer is scary, crappy, hurts people and has taken too many of our family and friends. So, we do the only thing we can…We MOVE ON, LIVE LIFE, and enjoy TIME! Through my cancer journey, I found that one of my favorite activities (besides talking hahhaha) is cycling….and I do A LOT of it…It makes me happier, healthier and is a chance for me and our family to make a difference in the war on cancer.

Riding the Pan-Mass Challenge has been a dream of mine and this year I am READY to commit my time and energy to training and reaching the fund raising minimums.

I need to be fit enough to complete the ride. That is a feat in itself. You see, I am approximately 2-years “cancer-free” and have cycled myself from obesity to being in my body mass index range. I am proud of those facts. My motivation has been to live longer, be a better person and to help others navigate through there cancer journey. I like the Pan-Mass Challenge, because 100% of the donations go toward finding a cure for cancer. A cure for any cancer is important, and there is a lot of progress. WE NEED MORE…..I am sick of cancer, what it has done to me, my family, and friends. So, I will do the work and training to help anyone, in any way possible. What I need is people like you to donate to, support and sponsor me. Every dollar counts. So, please either donate through this secure site….

The link at the end of this email will take you to my Pan-Mass Challenge Profile. This is my personal fundraising website. Join me in reaching this year’s goal. Last year’s gift to the Jimmy Fund of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute represented 100% of all donations, and brought the 32 year total to $338 million.

The PMC raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country, $338 million since 1980 and $35 million last year alone! This success is the result of a lot of people riding for, and caring about, a cure. And because every penny matters, 100 percent of your donation goes to DFCI.

I’ve made a personal commitment to ride and raise $4,300. So I hope you can help me achieve this significant goal.

Please donate to my PMC ride at one of the following links:

On April 27-29, 2012, I will participate in an inspiring event honoring our nation’s wounded servicemen and women. You have a unique opportunity to help me celebrate their service to our nation. Let me tell you about it.

World T.E.A.M. Sports, a 25-year-old not-for profit organization, will host its 2012 Face of America Bike Ride. This two-day bike ride from the Pentagon at our Nation’s Capitol to the historic battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania will honor our military – injured, veterans and active duty — and the true American Spirit.

Like all World T.E.A.M. Sports events, the Face of America teams disabled and non-disabled athletes to provide inspiration to all Americans. Everybody, disabled or non-disabled, is encouraged to join as a participant in this wonderful event. If you can’t join me in participating, you can still show your support for our disabled servicemen and women by making a contribution. As a participant, I have agreed to raise funds through my ride. You can make a contribution to support me by clicking on the URL below. http://worldteamsports.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=1001477&lis=1&kntae1001477=3F208DF0C7964E039312678F74F04B97&supId=315433167 . I am also a disabled rider who is committed to helping myself, my disability community and our country understand that disability is a term that is “fuzzy.” Many of us gain so much from cycling (rode, mountain, recumbent, hand) or other positive outlets. Together we can make a difference.

Welcome to the Donation Page of
Gina, Mike and Rachael Utegg
Thank you for your involvement!

If you are unable to donate online, please print out a donation form on personal page.

Join me in my efforts to support World Team Sports!

The Exceptional Athlete Matters (T.E.A.M.)… this well chosen acronym and message is very meaningful, especially if you are disabled or know someone who is disabled. WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS is a registered nonprofit organization which encourages and fosters a sense of pride, community, accomplishment, and goal achievement through athletics for people of all abilities. My family and I have been a proud member of this organization for many years. This year, I ride my recumbent bike from Washington DC to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and my family will volunteer their time. The ride is called THE FACE of AMERICA, and it is a 501c3 approved charity event http://www.worldteamsports.org .THE FACE of AMERICA is a fundraiser, and a celebration to thank the United States armed services for all they do to keep us safe. It is also a chance for disabled riders like me to participate in a fabulous event which will raise money to help cover the costs of healthcare, and sports rehabilitation for our brave, hard-working and injured or disabled vets and active armed service members. Please join our family and supporting this much needed cause.

My family and I have been participants and very active in WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS. You see we have been very athletic our entire lives and have enjoyed athletics to the fullest. My husband and I have always enjoyed playing and supporting athletics. In 1997 we had a lovely daughter, and we had and still have most of our family fun participating, coaching and cheering on her teams. I am riding as part of TEAM WHO SAYS I CANT, a group of athletes of all abilities and experiences. The TEAM name is also the TEAM mission. We help facilitate positive athletic and life events in each others lives. Basically, we motivate and inspire each other through lives ups and downs. We also train, and participate in events and competitions for charity and to challenge our mind, body and soul…..

This year will be bittersweet, as we usually celebrate the end of our 110 mile journey at Crpl Seamus Garrahy’s farm and Marine Barracks. Our fabulous host won his battle with cancer, but ran out of time and passed away Monday 1/09/2012…http://worldteamsports.org/2012/seamus-garrahy/ So, this year, it is with sadness and pride that we ride for Seamus.

I am a proud third-year participant of the Face of America, and cannot wait to fundraise and cycle with some really great new friends.

The reason for my ride and for my family being part of the THE FACE OF AMERICA as volunteers is that we are part of a DISABILITY COMMUNITY. This is a proud and wonderful community, where I feel most comfortable, and we have met and are friends with some great people. The other element is that we are AMERICANS and we feel very proud to ride, celebrate life, challenge, and be part of the community which is so accepting and willing to try new things, and to raise money to assist with healthcare costs for the brave and selfless men and women of our USA armed services. We also strongly support The Exceptional Athlete Matters (T.E.A.M.), and our military. We hope that you will also help by donating to this very important and cause which is close to our hearts and souls.

Please follow my journey on Twitter @BRAINtechPLEASE. I will journal the trials and tribulations of our fabulous journey. Thank you in advance for your donations and support.

Kindest Regards,

This blog is mainly about health and wellness and resources. It’s also about investing in the youth of America.

Usually we talk about traumatic brain injury (TBI), post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), electronic devices, resources, tools, hopefully some cool ways to make use of healthier and happier. And for fun we splash in some human interest stories. Our hope is simple: publish useful information and we pay it forward.

We have many writers and our Blogs are of different perspectives and genres, but one is important to some target group. This blog is clear and simple. I love children, I have children, and I have a very large inner child. Children are our future and each and every one of them deserves a chance to be happier and healthier. One organization which recognizes this is the YMCA. The YMCA proudly offers programs of so many diverse areas (health, sports, learn to swim, camp, daycare, family fun, competitions, dance, music and so much more).

With all the programs the YMCA has for children and adults, it amazes me. It gives me great joy as a YMCA volunteer and parent, when I see a child succeed. The core values, success through trying your best at an activity, and in working either alone or in groups. A YMCA can be life-altering to children and a place for them to grow and reach their potential. I hope everyone has experienced the joy of watching a child’s face light up, followed by a huge smile and a look of accomplishment that they have done something “out of the box,” and they feel great. That is what is seen on the many faces of the youthful campers of the Merrimack Valley YMCA summer camps.

Some children can not afford camp. The YMCA therefore has the Reach Out for Youth Campaign in order to ensure that all children have the ability to attend our YMCA summer camps regardless of financial situation. We just want the children to enjoy a fabulous camping experience.

This is the donation url: https://ops1.operations.daxko.com/features/onlinegiving/donationdetails.aspx?cid=3101 but please read on to understand the campaign, and how we are helping youth attend YMCA camp.

What does the Reach Out For Youth Campaign do?

The ROFY Campaign raises money to ensure that ALL children have the opportunity to attend camp (Otter, Lawrence and Nokomis). Funds go to help children who normally would not be able to afford camp due to financial hardship. In 2011, we provided enough financial assistance that was raised through the Reach Out for Youth campaign that over 100 children were able to attend summer camp (between the 3 camps). That is impressive and something to be very proud of.

What is the purpose of the campaign?

I could go on and on about the benefits that our camps have on children and families, but this group already is well aware of the benefits. We all chose the Merrimack Valley YMCA Camps for different reasons. What we have in common is the passion and special stories about a wonderful place for “children to be children”, to live and learn core values, and grow. We are fortunate enough to experience the positive impact camp has had on our children, and our families first-hand. The ROFY Campaign provides that same fabulous experience to children, regardless of the ability to pay.

What is the best way to contribute to the Reach Out forYouth Program?

We need reach out and raise money to get your pledges submitted through the attached form. Also, please feel free to share this pledge form with your friends and family who may want a tax deduction, love children and want to support a great program, or are your typical circle of friends/philanthropists who help make this campaign strong.

Thank you all very much for what you do to make the Camp Services Branch, the YMCA and our youth better.

Choices for the attached Pledge Form.

There are several payment options described on the pledge card pdf. Pledging is flexible and the attached form gives us many options for how we pay (pledge now and pay later, one time sum, or break up into smaller payments through the year).

Thank you for your investment in the youth of America.

Hello,

I am a BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR! Diagnosed with breast cancer 2009. I was 40 years old at the time. It was my first mammogram. Of course, I have seen and been hurt by cancer from watching loved ones fight the battle, hasn’t everybody? This time it was me. How could it be? What did I do wrong? The answer is, I did nothing wrong-cancer happens.

It happens too often, and something needs to be done about it. I work hard now to try to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. My outlet has been my recumbent bike. Riding my bike helps me refocus my thoughts to the positive. It also allows me to achieve great personal success, meet people in the cancer community, raise awareness of programs and resourses, and raise money to fight cancer. This year I’m doing a number of charity rides. An important ride is the August 2012 Philadelphia LiveSTRONG Challenge. This will be my third year cycling this event. I am signed up for the 70-mile route and will train hard for myself, my family and for my cancer community. If you’re looking for a good tax deductible charity, which helps a lot of people navigate through cancer, please support me as I ride with a group called Cyclists Combating Cancer. My secure personal donation page can be found at: http://laf.livestrong.org/goto/HeckCancer . Donations of any amount are appreciated go toward the many programs provided free of charge by the Lance Armstrong Foundation/LiveSTRONG

Why I Fundraise for LiveSTRONG, cancer charities, and need your help:

I never realized how emotionally draining and chaotic the process of being diagnosed and treated for cancer really is. There were biopsies, surgeries, so many statistics thrown at me, and treatment plans that were just plain confusing. 2009 was a really long year. Not just for me..for my family, my friends, and honestly for the thousands or millions of other people, who I had no idea were also battling this thing called CANCER.

LiveSTRONG can help you with questions, clinical trials, mental health and financial advice. It’s a free service. That is why I ride. Here is the site http://www.Livestrong.org/gethelp/

My journey continues and I am two years cancer free. Two years is a great milestone and I’m very proud to be a cancer survivor. I am also aware of the fact that noone should take cancer for granted. It tends to creep up people and sucker punch them. I can say that I hate cancer, however, going through treatment journey was life altering and helped me understand myself better. I also realized humanity, humility and love are alive and well.

This becomes clear when you see the outpouring of support from family and friends. Fascinatingly, many of my closest bonds and realization of unconditional caring and love was from the other patients in treatment. You spend a lot of time in treatment. Sights, smells, faces and memories of chemotherapy and radiation become a part of you. It is a love/hate relationship. You know you need the treatment to get better. You also see friends die. That is the hardest part. That feeling of helplessness when a lovely person tells you,” I will not be in treatment anymore.”

The first time I heard this, I said “Oh good, wow, you finished early, COOL.” I was naive. How would I know? The patient’s spouse clarified, “no honey, we were told there is nothing more they can do.” Again, how would I know? I thought we were all in treatment to get better. It never occurred to me that some of us were not going to make it. Well, many of my family and friends did not make it through treatment, but some did not. Was it painful? Absolutely. I would attend funerals and was overwhelmed at first. Then the crazy part is, after some time and reflection, there was some kind of peace with myself and the loss of people I loved. Not happiness, peace…..I let go of the anger and lessened my sadness. It does creep in at times and I cry, but…..I hold in my heart the joy and positive energy from the people that I was lucky enough to have met in the first place. I also realized how great these people were. By the way, on each and every ride I do, I carry or wear the special gifts, trinkets, symbols and momentos that represent the bond that I have with my fallen loved ones. They are still on the adventure/journey with me. They are part of me and I am lucky for that.

What makes the cancer community so lovely? The people, of course..Patient, family, friend, whoever….During treatment (and beyond), we all talked and learned about each other’s families and lives. We shared stories that most people are too guarded to ever share. We live and laugh each day and trully lived in the moment. The bond that people develop while fighting for their lives is very unusual and special to me. I have lifelong friendships with new people and I have attended so many beautiful and positive funerals for my family and friends who died of cancer. I never want anyone to have to go through what I did, and more importantly, I am sick of seeing friends and family die. I could either sit back and do nothing, or stand up and fight back. I choose to fight back for ME, MY CANCER WARRIORS and ANGELS! I do what I can to raise money to fight cancer and to provide resources (financial, clinical trials, mental health, etc.) to cancer patients and their families. Please join my family and I, as we challenge our bodies and minds to raise money to help future generations and families currently in some stage of their cancer journey. Again, the personal secure donation page is: http://laf.livestrong.org/goto/HeckCancer .

We appreciate tax-deductible donations of any amount. The money is going to help many people through the programs at LiveSTRONG. If you would like to learn more about programs at LiveSTRONG here is their homepage http://www.livestrong.org/ (a 5013c charity)

Thank you for listening and for your support.

Take care and be well,

Gina Utegg is a 42-year old former pharmaceutical executive with a husband and teeneager. She lives in Massachusetts and has suffered 3 separate traumatic brain injuries, 2 from car accidents and one from a fall. She is also a breast cancer survivor. I met Gina one day in July at a place called Spot Pond in a Boston area urban park known as Middlesex Fells. She was arriving to participate in a Universal Access kayaking program. It was a glorious sunny summer day with a deep blue sky and random puffy clouds.

While the program staff worked out an adaptation for her grip on the kayak paddle – they were busy duct taping pipe foam to the paddle so that Gina had a larger and softer area to hold – I asked Gina a few questions. As the program coordinator, I was visiting today to see how this new kayak program was going in its first season at Spot Pond.

“What brings you here to kayak, Gina?” I asked.

“Oh!”, she exclaimed, “It gives me freedom. I love it out on the water. I’ve been here with my kids, alone, on sunny days, in the rain. I love it all.” As she stood next to me, the fact that she had a disability did not show. As we talked further I found out that Gina had been working hard over the past few years using various therapeutic methods to address memory, physical and emotional issues that were the result of her injuries.

“My confidence was shot,” she announced. “I had no confidence. It is so hard to keep trying. But kayaking and recumbent cycling made life fun. I met all these great people here and I love coming every week. Now I have confidence again. I am much more motivated to try new things and push myself further.” Her enthusiasm showed with every word and I marveled at her upbeat attitude. Clearly she had found a therapy that was working.

It was time to get in the boats. Gina walked onto the dock unassisted and sat down to get into the front end of a double kayak while Willow, the program leader, held the boat secure. They were using a wide flat water boat which is quite stable and sat waiting while other staff and participants got into their boats on the nearby beach. In no time four kayaks, myself included in a solo boat, were launched and traveling on the open water.

The sense of bright spaciousness, the smell of the fresh water, the warmth of the sun and the cool breeze were exhilarating. The lake stretched out before us in all directions, its forested coastline occasionally marked with some rocky spots, and several islands both near and far were apparent by sight. A few gulls floated lazily over us. I could hear the sound of traffic on busy I-93, but otherwise the scene was idyllic so close to Boston. It felt wonderful to be afloat on the water, propelling my sleek boat with a paddle.

Willow slowed the group down after we had paddled for awhile and coached us in paddling strokes. We all practiced turning our boats for a few minutes, then proceeded to travel again at her suggestion to paddle around an island. We had with us a certified lifeguard, Moe, who paddled like me in a solo boat. Another tandem completed our group, two women from the Statewide Head Injury Program, both named Susan, one of whom was recovering from an injury, the other a staff person providing steering assistance and support. We filed off in a colorful line of boats as we circled the island with its rocky outcropping and white pines.

The group chatted in easily about several topics as we paddled back across the lake to the dock and beach. Our hour was up and soon more participants with disabilities would have their chance to explore the lake. Gina had paddled beautifully today and was pleased with her progress.

After we landed, Gina and I visited some more. “I loved hand cycling with the Statewide Head Injury group at the Nashua River Rail Trail in Ayer,” she told me, “and I really want to try horseback riding.”

“Gina that’s great,” I encouraged. “Our riding program has just two sessions at Bradley Palmer State Park in Topsfield, not too far from where you live. The dates are August 24th and September 9th I believe, both Fridays. You might also want to consider our new sailing program on the Charles River at the Esplanade in Boston. That runs every week on Thursdays and some weekends too.”

Gina’s face lit up. “Oh yes!” she said with excitement. “How do I sign up?”

You, like Gina, can sign up for many different outdoor recreation programs in the Massachusetts State and Urban Park system designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities. Programs occur throughout the Commonwealth and include activities such as canoeing, rowing, fishing, cycling and hiking in addition to those mentioned already. These program activities are provided by the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Universal Access Program. Some activities are free, others, like paddling, have a nominal fees per person. To find out more and obtain a statewide summer program calendar, call 617-626-1294 or 413-545-5353. You can also get information on line at www.mass.gov/dcr/universal_access

As Gina and I said goodbye, I paused before I headed to my car and looked back at the dock. A man in a wheelchair as getting ready to transfer into a kayak with the lifeguard Moe’s assistance. I walked away smiling, knowing that another adventure on the water was about to begin.

There are many defining moments in one’s life. They make us who we are, and may change our lives for the better.

Some days are dark, and difficult but hope, love, compassion and motivation can change you for the better.

My name is Gina. I am a 42-year old wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and a survivor.

Ten years ago, I would have written, that I am Senior Pharmaceutical Executive-Regulatory Affairs, Chemistry, Manufacture & Controls, who has contributed heavily to the reduction and eradication of infectious disease. My life was changed in three seconds on August 20, 2001, at 6:01 pm. I was moments from home when I saw a car, counted to three and heard what I thought was a gun shot. It wasn’t. The noise was my vehicle being struck head on by a drunk driver who was going 55 miles per hour. It seems like this all happened yesterday, but as I celebrated my 10-year Alive Day on Aug 20, 2011, I realized how my life has changed and how lucky I am.

The motor vehicle accident disabled me. I suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, fatigue, and my central nervous system, back, and neck are in a chronic state of pain, strange phenomena, or just new oddities. What broke the worst, was, ME. That’s right. I was not ME. My identity was gone and it took years of psychological support for me to accept myself. I relearned how to walk, talk, fall, eat, use assistive technology, and most importantly try to remember my brain and my occupation are now different. Actually, I had no occupation, as my company, “let me go”, and it was determined that I was disabled in all occupations. At first, that was one of the most hurtful and devastating things that I ever heard.
That is something that many people with disabilities are made to deal with. Processing, grieving and accepting this fact take some time, and a lot of work. Ten years later, I can say with confidence and pride, that I am disabled in all occupations, but an occupation does not define me. I define me, and I am a good person who does the best she can.

My life is not easy, and some may call it tragic. I call it, a new beginning. Post motor vehicle accident, and my three years of self pity and shame, I was introduced to recumbent cycling and fun adventures for disabled and TBI survivors. In this time, I had gained about 70 pounds, walking hurt my back and I got on this crazy bike called trike, and something clicked and I got my life back. I know it sounds strange, but I could cycle and be active again and it was fantastic. Sports were back and I needed them badly. About this same time, I cycled more and advanced to a two-wheel recumbent, and started to find the new me. Funny thing is that my doctors told me, I would never cycle on two wheels again. Ok, I did wear my daughter’s hockey equipment, my helmet and a mouth guard for about 3 months as I learned, “how to ride that recumbent…” My balance and body fought me, but I am pleased to say that after a few months of practice riding, I became a recumbent cyclist. I currently have thousands miles (on two and three wheels), smiles and donations banked to show those doctors, that some times, you have have to get back into life and take a chance. That is my style and my story, but I also pay it forward.

I was becoming “New Gina” more with every pedal stroke and it was liberating. I started going to group activities, recumbent rides, kayaking, ropes courses (through Statewide Head Injury Program) and surrounded myself with positive support groups, not doctors, but real people. I found that though my organization skills and some cognitive function was diminished, I was still able to speak about my injuries and experience to help others. This also gave me back so much and in turn helped people with disabilities and the doctors who were learning about treatment of TBI and PTSD, etc.

I volunteered as a speaker for the Massachusetts Brain Injury Association, a Speech and Language Pathology College course, to sudents in schools (“What is Cancer?” and “What is TBI, concussion, sports injuries and prevention”), at YMCA fundraisers, and who ever needed a speaker. I still enjoy speaking and I learned that I still have a voice and can make a difference in this world regardless of my title, or ability.

With help of friends, I started a blog and a Face Book group called,“electronicBRAINedgement,” and a twitter account called @BRAINtechPLEASE. These were first introduced for the purpose of helping disabled, TBI, military and elderly find affordable assistive technology. I became a volunteer moderator for the Symbian Foundation (Nokia), and lobbied hard for positive changes to mobile accessible devices. Many of my thoughts and ideas have been integrated into Nuance/Talks/Dragon software in the Nokia/Symbian operating systems. I am a disabled insider in the electronics and applications development community and my commitment is to help others.

Today @BRAINtechPLEASE has morphed into 800+ followers, who can learn about assistive technology, military, accessible sports, mental health, positive living, recreation, fund raising, and cancer.

Cancer was added as a topic on@BRAINtechPLEASE (and THE WAITING ROOM on Face Book) as unfortunately, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, April 2009. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and another new beginning. The cancer survivorship brought a new sensitivity and element to my life. I was shocked and concerned, but I had already been through so much with this disabling motor vehicle accident and mishaps, and had great support, and a fabulous team of oncology doctors. It was mainly in their hands, but my family and I pulled together and we are tough. I am 2-years cancer free on October 5, 2011.

While I was doing chemotherapy, I would go for walks, and lift one pound weights, just to fool myself into thinking that I was hurting because, I just worked out. This was a helpful strategy, especially post the Neulastin (White cells injection) which made me feel achy. My family and I used techniques to cope and overcome some of the physical discomfort of cancer treatment. It was my way of coping and it seemed to work. Radiation was dreadful, and I do not wish that on anyone. The burning is not nearly as painful, as being 40-years old and seeing friends die. But I have cancer and cancer does not have me.

With this, “new beginning,” I already had some experience with coping and staying out of depression. I was “there” before and was not going back. So, bald, fat, and burnt, I got on a treadmill and walked, lifted weights, and rode a stationery recumbent bike because I was now determined to cycle 110 miles in two days for World T.E.A.M (The Exceptional Athlete Matters) Sport, in the Face of America (FoA) Ride. I wanted to do this ride benefitting military healthcare and recreation sports for years. The ride is from Washington, D.C. to Gettysburg, and I wanted to challenge myself and cycle with my disabled military friends with TBIs, PTSD, and prosthetics etc. Finally, barely out of cancer treatment, April 2010 was my first year for FoA and I was smiling the entire ride. I met so many wonderful people and we succeeded together on our hand cycles, recumbents and modified bikes. I was happy cycling locally, but this event changed my life. I was a disabled athlete riding 110 miles. I was empowered. This was truly a catalyst for me. Each April, I ride my recumbent and my family volunteers for the FoA. Along the way, we meet new friends and realize that life is awesome and we are symbols of America, ability and success.

When the FoA is done, I continue blogging, and sending out resources for military assistance, TBI, PTSD, Trauma, mental health, accessible sports, healthy tips and cancer. I ride my recumbent as many days as I can and then the cancer advocacy and fundraising rides occur.

I cycle proudly for a group called Cyclists Combating Cancer (CCC). We are a very large group of survivors, co-survivors and people whose lives have been touched by cancer. I enjoy this group also. You see, we are not sitting home, worrying about cancer, we are visiting sick people and flying a flag called the Spokes of Hope (SoH). The Spokes represent all the various types of cancer and the unity we have through the good and bad for our cancer warriors and angels. CCC and SoH also fund raise, lobby Congress, and cycle together in every state (I made three state ride so far this year). This year, I was the first DISabled and PINK Spokes of Hope jersey ever to lead a ride. This was a huge deal. I am one of three SoH members with a TBI. The fact that I started the parade lap on my recumbent was well-publicized and well-received and I was proud to do it. I am referring to SoH Rhode Island. What a fabulous group and we combined with TEAM M-POWER, which is the Mandeville family who lost their brother to brain cancer last year. This collaboration was wonderful and a positive step toward combating cancer and helping people who have cancer as a disability. The culmination of these events, is the Philadelphia LiveSTRONG Challenge. My family and I fund raise, volunteer, and they run the 5K, while I ride my recumbent 45-miles through those lovely Pennsylvania hills. This is my second Philly LveSTRONG, and we will continue going, as long as we can. This Challenge brings together people of all abilities and of various stages in their cancer journey. We all walk/jog/cycle, but most of all, fund raise, celebrate fitness, life, family and make new friends.

I attribute a lot of my success to my husband and daughter. They have been with me through some very dark times. Without their love, support and patience, I would not be the woman I am today. To reiterate, my name again is Gina, Ex-Senior Pharmaceutical Executive. I am a survivor of body and brain trauma, cancer, and more. I am disabled, however, I have and will continue to advocate, raise awareness and money for multiple disability, fitness, YMCA, military and cancer communities.

My new life mission is to help facilitate successful interactions and inspire people with disabilities and cancer to be comfortable with who they are, get out, have fun, make healthy choices, and enjoy the life they are lucky enough to have post a trauma or cancer.

A Better Person: My Support of World T.E.A.M. Sports

http://www.facebook.com/gina.utegg#!/worldteamsports

BY GINA UTEGG

Arlington, Virginia, September 28, 2011 – I am very grateful to be alive and to have World T.E.A.M. Sports in my life.

World T.E.A.M. Sports has been an important part of my family’s lives for many years. My husband Mike and I started volunteering for the organization after my disabling automobile accident. At that time, World T.E.A.M. Sports was based in Boston.

We began our World T.E.A.M.relationship to introduce our daughter Rachael to children with disabilities who are empowered to do athletics, and frankly, just be kids. Our goal was for her to understand that I would be okay, even with my disability. We thought the best way for her to relate to people with disabilities would be for her to spend time with children her own age. For these kids, many labeled as disabled, in this inclusive setting, they were just kids playing. We loved this concept and thought it was a healthy approach for our family.

A June, 2007 World T.E.A.M. Sports indoor climbing event in Boston for disabled children. Photograph World T.E.A.M. Sports archives.

Rachael was very excited to play ice hockey, sled hockey, wheelchair basketball, and climbing a rock wall with the other children. Afterwards, she was exhausted. My husband and I asked her how her day was, and if she had fun. “Yes, I had a lot of fun playing ice hockey,” she said, “but sled hockey and wheelchair basketball are really hard.” It was the exact response we wanted from Rachael.

My husband and I looked at each other, gave a nod, and replied, “Well, some children are in different medical situations and may not be able to play hockey or basketball in the form you are used to. Maybe even some of the children might think that the ice hockey you think is so easy is too difficult to do. As a matter of fact, I think I saw some children in wheelchairs.”

We then shifted gears and asked what she thought about her experiences of the day. Her reply was great – she had a lot of fun with some really cool kids. Rachael asked if we saw the girl who had no legs and one arm, climb up the rock wall. We did, and were impressed at how quickly the girl climbed. This young lady had a great attitude and was the fastest to climb that wall.

When it was Rachael’s turn to climb, she was frightened and only got one foot off of the floor before coming down. We encouraged her to try again and she did, but her fear of heights limited her to a few more feet of climbing before she came down. That was a good start.

What Rachael got out of the day was invaluable. She literally climbed out of her comfort zone, played with children of all abilities, and tried some really cool sports. We knew then we made the right decision in allowing World T.E.A.M. Sports into our family. We already knew how to be family, but we were well on our way to learning how to be a family that is comfortable and accepting when one member has a disability.

Through our Boston experience, we learned about the Face of America ride. That was always something I wanted to do, but I put it off for many years. After my diagnosis of breast cancer in 2009, surgery, chemo and radiation treatments, I was determined to start exercising, cycling and getting physically fit. I wanted to participate in the Face of America ride that I had put off for too long.

For 2010, I decided to ride the Face of America, from Washington to Gettysburg. Patti Haley, who I met at the Boston World T.E.AM. Sports events helped me get onto a team. I think I smiled most of the ride. It was one of the most amazing things I have done in my life. I impressed myself and made it to the finish.

Completing the ride meant a lot to me. First, I showed up. I had also become more comfortable with my disabled self, with my cancer survivor component. For two days, though, I was just a cyclist having fun, meeting people, talking, helping, achieving and finishing under those beautiful howitzers at Seamus Garrahy’s Gettysburg farm. That ride changed my life for the better and that is why we come back each year. I have made so many friends and connections to which I am grateful and lucky.

Competing in the 2011 Nautica Malibu

My goal at the September 17-18 Nautica Malibu Triathlon was just to finish. I could have done “just the cycling leg” on the ParaTRI relay if I wanted. Believe it or not, my swimmer at southern California’s Zuma Beach could have been 1972 Olympic champion Mark Spitz. That would have been really cool. What was much cooler, though, was doing all three legs of the triathlon by myself. Pushing through my challenges, I won first place in the Parathlete women’s division!

I remember seeing Timra Stump from World T.E.A.M. Sports while I was running the course. We high fived as we passed, and she said, “WOW, you are doing great!” The next time I saw her, she cheered me on as I entered the chute at the finish line. Big smiles all around.

I knew the moment I crossed the line I had won the 2011 Paul Mitchell Spirit Award, presented annually to an athlete with disabilities who has overcome obstacles and who has also given back to help others. The award could have been presented to anyone, and I am honored it was me. I also am humbled and even more motivated to represent older, disabled, cancer-surviving moms, and the two communities that I strive to do so much for. I get so much back in friendship, laughter, sanity, fun and very crazy sports. I climbed up onto the stage to receive the award and was surprised to hear the announcement: “And first place winner in the women’s ParaTriathlon division is Gina Utegg.” Holy cow! I nailed it!

Smiling ear-to-ear, I was so proud. I remember looking out into the crowd and seeing Timra cheering me on, taking pictures. I was all decked out in my World T.E.A.M. Sports gear, and wearing my badges of honor on each wrist: LIVESTRONG, Face of America, Wounded Warrior Project, and a lot of mementos from my cancer warriors and angels. I had a lot of people in my heart and mind that day, especially my husband Mike and daughter Rachael, as they inspire me. They have always supported and loved me, as my team, as I approach challenges in my life. I have battled my way out of some very dark places and I have lost too many friends, especially to cancer. I do not take my experience lightly and have become a warrior to compete and advocate for myself, my disability, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and my military and cancer communities.

When I learned that World T.E.A.M. Sports would sponsor my flight for the triathlon, I was shocked and amazed. Starting my training for the triathlon, I received my World T.E.A.M. Sports tri suit in the mail. I thought I looked like a superhero suit and when wearing it, I felt like one, too. I love this organization and I believe very strongly in what it does in empowering athletes of all abilities to succeed.

Not only was I fortunate to be supported by World T.E.A.M. Sports, I received emotional, calming, athletic, friendship, and just great personal help from Timra. She came out for the triathlon and was my handler. I was so happy to see her and am not sure how I can ever thank her. As an experienced triathlete, Timra helped me organize myself, thoughts, strategy and lay out my gear, explaining what to do for a fast and efficient transition. She helped me with my swimming, but we lost each other, as she needed to assist an athlete with one leg. I made it through the 0.5 mile swim doing the back stroke, as I did not want to injure my neck more, and made it to shore to find Timra ready to help me. She found me and cheered me all the way to the transition area. She then ran me in and helped me with the swim to bike transition. Needless to say, things were very good.

Thank you, World T.E.A.M. Sports. You helped me become a better person and a symbol for those who need inspiration, like I needed at one point in my life. Thank you all very much for believing in me.

Timra’s Story

“You will find, as you look back on your life, that the moments that stand out are the moments when you have done things for others.”- Henry Drummond

BY TIMRA STUMP

Since my first experience with World T.E.A.M. Sports in the summer of 2010, I have had the honor to participate alongside of some truly inspiring and amazing people. World T.E.A.M. Sports board member Erik Weihenmayer, Face of America teammate Jothy Rosenberg and Adventure TEAM Challenge teammate Sherry Schulz are just a few of these athletes. Events with World T.E.A.M. Sports, whether participating, working or volunteering, have given me so much inspiration. My job, however, as Gina Utegg’s Sherpa at the Nautica Malibu Triathlon proved to be beyond exceptional.

Several weeks ago, I received a Facebook message from longtime World T.E.A.M. Sports participant Gina Utegg. It was kind of cryptic – “Got a second, need to pick your brain” was all it said. Sure, I replied, give me a call. Gina had just received news that she was nominated for the 2011 Paul Mitchell Spirit Award at the upcoming Nautica Malibu Triathlon in California, and had made the decision that she was going to participate as well. She was curious if I thought she could compete, and if I could help her with what she needed to know to participate.

I told her that not only was I sure she could do a triathlon, I would also be honored to help her. We spent some time discussing the basics of triathlon, the gear she needed, and what training she could do over the next two weeks to prepare for her first triathlon. Having only two weeks to prepare for a triathlon would probably defer most people from even considering it. Not Gina, two weeks – GAME ON was her attitude! Gina’s excitement was contagious and I quickly found myself looking at flights from D.C. to Malibu to see if there was any way I could go out to support her. I think things have a way of working out when they are supposed to do so, so I was able to book a flight to California.

A few days prior to the event, Gina received a telephone call from the event promoters. She had been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Spirit Award. When she called to let me know, I was so happy I had made arrangements to attend the race and give her some support.

Before arriving in Malibu, I received a call from one of the parathletes who was working with Gina in Los Angeles. Not only was he helping Gina with her logistics, but he was also fielding additional parathlete teams for the event. He inquired if it would be possible for me to swim with Gina since it would be her first triathlon swim and it would be in the Pacific Ocean. I agreed happily – if I could help, I would. He also wanted to know if I would mind lending a hand to another team that did not have anyone to do the run leg of the race. Honored to help with any parathlete team, I accepted.

On the Saturday before the race, Gina and I were able to check out the site, pick up race packets and get the lay of the land for the following day. Gina was the celebrity of the day, doing interviews and being pampered by the event sponsors. It was great to watch her basking in the excitement and yet remaining so calm! Her positive attitude is so contagious; she either has no fear or just covers it well. Gina’s excitement on race morning continued to inspire me as well as everyone she talked to. She was ready to have the time of her life and nothing was going to keep her from giving her all. She conquered the swim with no help from me, she rocked the bike with a smile so big you couldn’t imagine and she ran like she’d been doing triathlons all her life. Gina is a role model for anyone who faces adversity; she never lets it get her down and certainly doesn’t feel sorry for herself. She is positive and giving and not only appreciates the life she is living, but those around her who choose to give as well.

For my part, participating alongside athletes who are physically challenged is always a reminder how lucky I am to be able bodied. Knowing the stories of so many of athletes I have had the honor to support reminds me it can all be temporary. I loved swimming and running on Sunday, not just because I enjoy triathlon, but because I had an opportunity to be part of a T.E.A.M. and help two incredibly strong athletes reach their goals of participating. This is the true essence of what World T.E.A.M. Sports is all about, to inspire people to try, and give them help if and when they need it.

Share and Enjoy:

Thank you for your involvement!

The ride is called THE FACE of AMERICA. http://www.worldteamsports.org .THE FACE of AMERICA is a fundraiser, and a celebration to thank the United States armed services for all they do to keep us safe. It is also a chance for disabled riders like me to participate in a fabulous event which will raise money to help cover the costs of healthcare for our brave, hard-working and injured or disabled vets and active armed service members.

I am riding as part of TEAM EDGE out of Fairfield, CT. I am a proud second-year member and cannot wait to fundraise and cycle with some really great new friends.

Oh, by the way, I may have forgotten an important part of my story or life journey. A few mishaps occurred in my life, in 2001 and 2004 which placed me into the disabled category. At first this was a very disturbing and dark realization, as our lives would never be the same. Though our lives have changed and my abilities have changed as well, The Exceptional Athlete Matters (T.E.A.M.) and some other very good nonprofits for encouragement of people of all abilities to get out and enjoy life, athletics, and challenging one’s self even in the face of adversity. We are grateful for our experience and I am riding THE FACE of AMERICA to help show other disabled people that we can achieve goals…Especially with family, friends, vets, active, abled, disabled all riding, donating, and/or cheering us on!
